Ces noms sont appelés en arabe أسماء الله الحسنى (Asma’ Allah al-Ḥusná), c'est-à-dire les « les plus beaux noms de Dieu ».

Selon un hadith : « Certes, Dieu a 99 noms, cent moins un. Quiconque les énumère entrera au Paradis ; Il est sans alter-ego et récompense le fait de citer ces noms un à un. » (Boukhāri, tome 8, B.12, R.12, hadith « du Prophète » d'Abū Hurayra).

Cette maxime est à prendre au sens allégorique et non pas littéral. Sera admis au paradis celui qui aura su comprendre l'essence divine de dieu au travers de cette liste et se sera efforcé de faire siennes les qualités associées à ces différents noms. Il existe plusieurs versions de ces listes car ces noms ont été extraits de différents passages du Coran et des hadiths.
