The written history of Afghanistan, can be traced back to around 500 BCE when the area was under the Achaemenid Empire, although evidence indicates that an advanced degree of urbanized culture has existed in the land since between 3000 and 2000 BCE. The Indus Valley Civilisation stretched up to large parts of Afghanistan in the north, with several sites being known.Alexander the Great and his Macedonian army arrived at what is now Afghanistan in 330 BCE after conquering Persia during the Battle of Gaugamela. Since then, many empires have established capitals inside Afghanistan, including the Greco-Bactrians, Mauryas, Kushans, Hindu Shahi, Saffarids, Samanids, Ghaznavids, Ghurids, Timurids, Mughals, Hotakis and Durranis.

افغانستان چې په رسمي توگه د افغانستان اسلامي جمهوريت په نوم ياديږي، په غرونو کې کلابند يو هېواد دی چې د اسيا د لویې وچې په څلورلارې کې پروت دی. په ټولگړې توگه دا هېواد د منځنۍ اسيا يوه برخه ده،‌ خو کله ناکله بيا په داسې سيمې څرگند شوی چې نه په منځني ختيځ او نه پر سوېلي اسيا پورې تړلې ده،‌ او دا پدې چې دغه سيمه د منځني ختيځ او سوېلي اسيا سره هڅوبيز، ژبتوکميز او جغرافيکي اړيکې لري. دا هېواد په لوېديځ کې له ايران سره،‌ په سوېل او ختيځ کې له پاکستان سره د ډيورند کرښه فرضی پوله،‌ په شمال ختيځ کې له چين سره، په شمال کې له تاجيکستان، ازبكستان او تركمنستان سره گډې پولې لري.

تاریخ مکتوب افغانستان به حدود ۵۰۰ سال پیش از میلاد مسیح، زمانی که افغانستان تحت شاهنشاهی هخامنشی قرار داشت، اشاره می‌کند. اگرچه شواهد نشان می‌دهد که درجه‌ای پیشرفته از فرهنگ زندگی شهرنشینی حدود ۳۰۰۰ تا ۲۰۰۰ سال پیش از میلاد مسیح در این سرزمین وجود داشت.افغانستان از لحاظ قدمت تاریخی، یکی از کهن‌ترین سرزمین‌های جهان به‌شمار می‌رود.
