這套書出版以後，廣受歡迎和好評。二十世紀三十年代中葉，毛澤東曾致電李克農購此書兩部，以解決延安幹部學習中國歷史之需。臥室床畔，長置此書，著名史學家柴德賡認為，此書作為歷史知識講，雖有不足，但內容是夠豐富的，敘述是有系統的。著名小說家二月河認為，此書文學上只能說是中平之作，但讀此書可以入門民族歷史，且是獨此壹家，別無分店。
